Do you need to know how to code to set up AI customer service?

Published August 19, 2026By Brian Sasbon4 min read

The short answer, with its asterisk

Setting up AI customer service without coding is possible, and most of what you will do never touches a line of code.

The asterisk is that the "no code" promise usually stretches further than it should. There is one piece that does need a technical person, and it is worth knowing which before you start rather than halfway through.

Below is the list split in three, without arranging it to look good.

What you do alone

This is most of the work and needs nothing beyond knowing your business.

  • Telling it how to speak. Tone, what never to say, how to treat the customer. You write it in plain language, the way you would explain it to a new hire.
  • Uploading your documents. Price list, policies, procedures. You upload them and it answers from what they say.
  • Defining what it does not touch. The topics you prefer to handle personally get handed off to a person.
  • Creating a new agent. For WhatsApp, Telegram or your website chat, whenever you want and without asking us.
  • Switching things on and off. Individual capabilities or the whole service.
  • Testing it. In a separate environment, before it talks to anybody.

If your case is answering questions, replying from your documents and taking orders, you finish here. There is no part two.

What is better done with help

Not because it is technical, but because the first time goes better with somebody who has done it.

Connecting WhatsApp is the typical case. The process belongs to Meta, not to us, and it has steps that force a redo if you take them out of order. You need a Meta Business account, and that is the requirement that stops most people.

Same with the initial setup of tone and limits. You can do it alone, but the first version always comes out better when somebody asks you the things you did not think of.

We run a discovery call and a demo on your own configuration before you decide anything.

What genuinely needs a technical person

Here is the honest part, which is the one almost nobody writes.

If you want the AI to do things in your systems (query a database of yours, record something in your management software, trigger an internal process), somebody has to know two things: the service address and the credentials.

That person is almost never you. It is usually whoever supports the system, or the vendor who sold it to you. It is not development work: it is a fact somebody has.

And there is a shortcut worth knowing. If your system publishes its technical documentation in a standard format, you paste that address and tick the functions you want. Each one gets configured on its own, without writing it by hand.

How to tell whether you will get stuck

Four questions to ask yourself before starting. If you answer yes to all four, you will not need anybody technical.

  1. Is what you want it to answer written down in some document of yours?
  2. Is the data it will need present in the conversation itself?
  3. Is handing off to a person enough when the topic gets complicated?
  4. Can you wait until a second stage to connect it to your systems?

The fourth pays off most. Almost nobody needs the connection to their systems on day one, and postponing it removes the only part that calls for technical help.

Test before you trust

A detail that cuts a lot of the risk out of setting up without coding.

When you connect something of yours, you can run the call from the panel and see what comes back: the status, how long it took and the full response. You do that before any conversation uses it.

A wrong credential shows up there, with you looking at the screen. Not on a Saturday with a customer waiting.

Conclusions

  • Most of the setup is done in plain language, with no code.
  • Connecting WhatsApp is not technical but is better done with help the first time.
  • The only part that calls for a technical person is connecting the AI to your own systems.
  • That fact is usually held by your software vendor, not by you.
  • Postpone the connection to your systems to a second stage and you start without getting stuck.

Frequently asked questions

Can I create more than one agent without asking for help?
Yes. You create them from the panel, for WhatsApp, Telegram or your site chat, as many as you want. There is no ticket to open and nobody to wait for.
What do I need ready before starting?
The channel you will be answering on, and a pass through the panel for the initial setup. With that you can already do the call and see it running on your own configuration.
If I get the setup wrong, will a customer see it?
Not if you test first. That is what the test environment is for: you can have it answer as if it were a real conversation, even using contacts from your address book, without anything reaching anybody.
How long does it take if I need something that does not exist yet?
If what you are asking for is already on the platform, the testing stage starts immediately. If custom development is needed, the typical turnaround is around two weeks.
